On March 14, 2006, in a polygamy article at Concerned Women for America, author, Janice Shaw Crouse,
wrote, "Pushing Polygamy: 'Big Love' Is Big Bore". (Her article was also published the next day at the conservative magazine, Human Events.)
Ms. Course opened with the following statement. "I was a skeptic when activists first claimed that, after the push to mainstream homosexuality, a push to take the stigma out of polygamy would follow. Well, according to Mark Henkel of TruthBearer.org, 'Polygamy rights is [sic] the next civil-rights battle.' He might have a point." she then went on to refer to the Newsweek article from which she got Mark Henkel's trademark sound-bite.
Later in her piece, however, Ms. Crouse unfortunately repeats the same mistake as appeared in that same Newsweek article: "a Gallup Poll last year revealed that fully 92 percent of Americans oppose polygamy." Actually, the May 2005 Gallup poll involving polygamy only revealed that 92% thought it was immoral. That is nowhere near the same thing as political opposition. For example, that same percentage would probably (rightly) say that lying is immoral, but that doesn't mean they would support the tyranny of criminalizing all lying. Of course, it is likely that Janice Shaw Crouse was only repeating the same mistake as it had appeared in that Newsweek article.
Throughout, the piece, Ms. Crouse correctly noted the soap-opera type of series that HBO's new show in march, 2006, "Big Love," involves. Even so, one of the larger points she makes is how the show does remove the silly "fantasy idea" that people so typically misperceive about polygamy. In the end, however, she believes that the false "fantasy idea" will remain, long after the "boring story" of the show ends, and after viewers move on to the next buzzworthy TV show to talk about.
What is most interesting about Janice Shaw Crouse's polygamy article at Concerned Women for America, though, is her acknowledgement that Founder Mark Henkel's long-established sound-bite, "may have a point." Indeed, it does.
